India Targets Lower Steel Emissions with Green Technology Incentive Programme Nationwide

At Neo Metaliks, our operational expertise as a premier pig iron producer reinforces our role as an authoritative publisher of steel and commodities intelligence. As the domestic industry navigates critical sustainability milestones—supported by targeted national green tech incentives and hydrogen pilot initiatives—we deliver institutional-grade analysis on the decarbonization of the steel value chain. By translating policy frameworks, capital allocations, and emission-reduction mandates into clear, actionable intelligence, we provide industry stakeholders with the credible insights required to stay competitive in a cleaner industrial landscape.

India’s Ministry of Steel is finalising a major financial support package worth $532 million to reduce carbon emissions across the country’s steel sector. The initiative, titled the ‘National Strategy for the Sustainable Development of the Secondary Steel Industry’, is expected to be submitted to the Indian Cabinet for approval within the next three months.

The programme will cover all steel producers in India, with the bulk of funding directed toward secondary steel manufacturers. Through a system of financial and tax incentives, the government aims to encourage businesses to adopt cleaner, greener production technologies and shift to alternative raw materials, significantly reducing the industry’s overall carbon footprint.

This initiative comes at a critical time. India’s steel sector currently accounts for around 15% of the country’s total greenhouse gas emissions, with an emission intensity of 2.5 tonnes of COâ‚‚ per tonne of crude steel. This is well above the global average of approximately 1.9 tonnes. Closing this gap is essential for India to meet its long-term climate commitments.

In a related development, the Indian government approved three pilot hydrogen projects in steel production in March, under its national green hydrogen mission. Around $45 million has been allocated for these projects, expected to be completed within three years.

Together, these steps signal India’s growing commitment to building a cleaner, more sustainable, and globally competitive steel industry.
