Our goal is to make complex market sentiments easy to grasp for everyone, without losing the depth or credibility of the information.

Pig iron Overview

Pig iron is a vital intermediate in steel production, formed by smelting iron ore in a blast furnace. It contains about 3.8–4.7% carbon, making it hard and brittle, and consists of roughly 92% iron with traces of manganese, silicon, sulphur, and phosphorus.

Due to its high carbon content and impurities, pig iron is not used directly except in limited applications. However, it serves as the primary raw material for producing steel.

Through further processing in basic oxygen furnaces (BOFs) or electric arc furnaces (EAFs), its carbon content is reduced and impurities removed, yielding various steel grades. This transformation allows the production of steel with tailored properties like strength, durability, and machinability.

Using pig iron is a cost-effective and efficient way to produce high-quality steel, making it indispensable in the iron and steel industry.

Is There a Scope for the Domestic Pig Iron Market to Pick Up in the Ongoing Subdued Trend?

Market Analysis

India is the world’s second-largest pig iron producer. Indian pig iron prices and market sentiments are influenced by a range of factors—including raw material costs, logistics, seasonal variations, supply-demand dynamics, and trends in the finished steel market, such as rebar, structural steel, hot rolled coils, cold rolled coils, and other finished steel products.

Let’s understand the Indian domestic pig iron market. In this blog, we aim to explore the recent price trends and shed light on the prevailing sentiments within the domestic steel industry.

The domestic pig iron market remained dull throughout April 2025. Prices plunged by around Rs. 1,500-3,000/ton due to persistently low buying confidence. The ongoing subdued trend in the overall domestic steel market als               o pressured pig iron sellers.

In Durgapur, a major hub for pig iron production, prices have witnessed a significant decline of approximately Rs. 2,700/ton during the month. Offers reduced from the levels of Rs. 36,200/ton on Apr’1 to 33,500/ton on Apr’30. One of the key reasons is the increased availability of scrap metal at lower costs. As scrap metal serves as an economical substitute for pig iron in steelmaking, many producers have shifted to using it, thereby reducing the demand for pig iron.

Additionally, a slump in demand for finished steel has also diminished the need for pig iron, which is a key raw material in steel production. On top of it, market uncertainty has further weakened buyer sentiment, discouraging material purchases. On the supply side, domestic pig iron production has risen as a few mills in the local region recently resumed operations after maintenance shutdowns. The development has flooded the local market with additional supply.

On the cost side, a slight downfall in met coke—a primary input in pig iron production, has led to a drop in production costs. This allowed producers to sell pig iron at reduced prices. However, it’s worth noting that the decline in met coke offers hasn’t been too steep, as domestic supply constraints and limited import availability still influence pricing.

Also, a quantity restriction (QR) has been imposed on lam (Low Ash Metallurgical Coke) coke imports into India, which leads to difficulties for those pig iron producers who do not have coke ovens.

Meanwhile, limited participation in pig iron auctions held in April also signals weak market appetite, reinforcing the downward price trend. Collectively, these factors—ranging from increased supply and lower input costs to fragile demand—have contributed to the sustained decline in pig iron prices in the Durgapur region.

Outlook

The Durgapur pig iron market continues to face downward pressure due to a mix of oversupply, weak demand, and falling input costs. Market participants are cautious, reflecting the broader steel sector’s ongoing volatility. Even the primary steel players’ price revision for early May deliveries has not influenced pig iron prices to strengthen as expected.

However, a slight price recovery was noticed in the Indian pig iron market right after the government announced a ceasefire on Saturday due to ongoing tensions with a neighbouring country.

on the raw material side, iron ore prices are expected to stabilise as mills prepare to restock ahead of the monsoon season, potentially preventing further declines. Also, a tight availability of cargo vessels from Australia has led to a domestic coal supply crunch. This may prompt met coke sellers to limit further price reductions.

Despite lower production costs, sentiment remains fragile due to tepid demand and rising supply. Unless there’s a meaningful recovery in finished steel demand or a shift in raw material trends, pig iron prices in Durgapur are likely to remain under pressure in the short term.
