India’s steel industry is expected to remain on a strong growth path in the financial year 2026-27, mainly because of government support and rising domestic demand. Steel production is forecast to increase by around 8% year-on-year, reaching 185 million tonnes, compared to 171 million tonnes in FY2026.
However, steel companies are expanding their capacities more carefully due to lower profit margins and global uncertainties, including tensions in the Middle East and other geopolitical issues.
India’s steel demand has grown rapidly over the last ten years, with domestic consumption increasing from 79 million tonnes in 2015 to 155 million tonnes in 2025. The demand is expected to grow further by 9% in FY2027, reaching 175 million tonnes, supported by strong infrastructure and construction activities.

A major reason for this positive outlook is the government’s large capital expenditure plan of ₹12.2 trillion. Investments in roads, railways, housing, and other infrastructure projects are expected to boost steel consumption significantly. The expansion of the PM Awas Yojana housing scheme and healthy growth in the cement industry also indicate strong construction activity in the coming years.
Conversely, the engineering and manufacturing sectors may witness slower growth because of high energy costs, inflation, and supply chain issues. However, government incentive schemes and stable demand from the automobile industry are expected to provide support.
Looking ahead, India aims to expand its steel production capacity to 300 million tonnes by FY2031 and 400 million tonnes by FY2036. At the same time, iron ore production is also expected to rise by nearly 9% to around 342 million tonnes, ensuring adequate raw material supply for the growing steel industry and strengthening India’s position as a global steel producer.
